Komische Oper Berlin

Komische Oper Berlin

The Italian-style theatre (Guckkastenbühne) remains the predominant stage typology today and can be found in most of the world’s major opera houses. The stage machinery operating behind the scenes and the changes of scenery are concealed from the audience in order to preserve the illusion of the performance.

Each production is the culmination of months of preparation, yet the public only experiences the final result. As a consequence, the theatre is open to audiences for only a few hours at a time, despite the constant and intense activity taking place within.

The concept of our proposal is founded on the idea of revealing the opera house’s hidden life to the city. Rather than concealing the processes of creation, rehearsal and production, the project allows the institution to engage directly with the urban realm, making visible the richness and complexity of its daily activity.
