Museum of Sacred Art

Museum of Sacred Art

Facing the sanctuary of the Black Virgin, the Museum of Sacred Art is embedded into the cliff of Rocamadour and unfolds over five vertically stacked levels anchored into the rock face. The museum presents the history of faith through collections of sacred art, archaeological artefacts and paintings.

The visitor route retraces the evolution of Christian faith and the history of this pilgrimage site. Given the strongly vertical nature of the building, the spatial organisation is structured around a central display core that gathers the most precious objects, while historical references are positioned along the perimeter of the rooms.

The collections themselves become the only visible sources of light, guiding visitors through the successive museographic sequences. A small temporary exhibition space, carved into the rock face, completes the programmatic arrangement.
