Henri IV Secondary School forms part of the major architectural ensembles that shape the historic centre of Poitiers. The project for its transformation offers a unique opportunity to requalify both the site and its buildings—a comprehensive architectural, urban and landscape reconquest that addresses several key challenges.
A new narrative emerges through a series of fundamental interventions: strengthening the heritage value of the Poitiers Plateau by respecting the existing fabric while achieving an optimised relationship between programme requirements and available spaces; restoring coherence to a site that has been altered and contradicted over time through the careful recovery of the original structures, freed from successive additions and transformations; and embracing responsible construction methods through the use of bio-based materials and dry-construction techniques.
The project seeks to reconcile heritage preservation with contemporary educational needs, revealing the site’s historical identity while ensuring its adaptability and long-term sustainability.
